Our Porters

DAY 1 : CUSCO TO HUAYLLABAMBA ( 12 km) : At 6 a.m. we pick you up from your hotel to travel to the Sacred Valley and to bring you to km 82, where we begin walking the Inca Trail. After 3 hours by private bus we walk about 5 hours on this first day. During the trek you see ruins of the Inca hillfort of Huillca Raccay and the archeologic site of Llactapata ( 2650 m, also known as Patallacta ), place where we stop for lunch. Llactapata means 'upper town' in Quechua and was first discovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911. We descend to the Cusichaca river. From parts of this trail there are great views of the Cordillera Urubamba (Urubamba mountain range) and the snow capped peak of Veronica 5860m. Following the bank of the river we arrive to our camp at Huayllabamba ( 3000 m, Quechua for 'grassy plain') or at another camp near by ( the `Unidad de Gestión de Machu Picchu´ gives out the camp sites once we do the reservation and get the permit for the Trail).

DAY 2 : HUAYLLABAMBA TO PACAYMAYO ( 12 km) : At 6 a.m. wake up tea in your tent to then have breakfast and start walking early. Today we walk about 7 hours, first climbing up from Huayllabamba following the bank of the Llulluchayoc river for about 1 hour to 'Tres Piedras' (three stones) and a small bridge over the Huayruro river. Further on we enter a beautiful Polylepis forest passing a waterfall.  We climb up for about 3 hours, reaching the treeline and Llulluchapampa (3,680m). We continue another 1½ hours climbing to the first and highest pass of the trail, Abra de Huarmiwañusca ('Dead Woman's Pass) at 4,200m. Prepare for the change of temperature. The decent from the pass is steep, following the trail on the left side of the valley and arriving to the campsite at Pacamayo (3,600m).

Winay wayna

DAY 3 : PACAYMAYO TO WIÑAYWAYNA (15 km) : From Pacaymayo we climb up for 1 hour to the circular ruins of Runkuracay, that overlook the valley.  Another 45 minute hike will bring us to the top of the second pass: Abra de Runkuracay (4,000m). The descent is steep, we walk on inca stone steps up to Sayacmarca ruins ( 3580 m, 'Inaccessible Town') that are protected on three sides by steep cliffs. The trail then climbs up to the 3rd pass (3,700m). The view from the pass offers excellent views of snow-capped peaks such as the Salkantay (6,180m) and Veronica (5,750m). From here we continue to Puyupatamarca ruins ('Town in the Clouds' ), our guide will explain about the ruins and inca bath we see before arriving to the ruins. We continue on an impressive Inca staircase. Then, after about an hour of walking through cloudforest, we get to the camp at Wiñaywayna ruins ( 2650 m). It´s about 7 hours walking today.

Machu Picchu

DAY 4 : WIÑAYWAYNA TO MACHU PICCHU ( 5 km) AND CUSCO : Breakfast at 4.30 a.m., to then walk down for about 1½ hous to Inti Punku (Sun Gate) and observe the sunrise above Machu Picchu. The first rays of the sun reach Machu Picchu at about 7am. Then we walk down to the ruins ( 2400 m); where we arrive about 8.00 a.m and stow the backpacks away at the entrance to do the tour of the ruins (aprox. 2 hours) before more people arrive with the train. - Manu oxbow lake

· Why go to Manu?

Manu is situated in the peruvian part of the Amazon basin and is one of the world´s great wilderness areas where wildlife is still undisturbed and plentiful.

The Manu Biosphere Reserve protects Tropical Alpine Grasslands ( Puna), Elfin ( temperate) and Cloud Forests, High Rainforest and Lowland Rainforest. In these different ecosistems we can find an extraordinary variety of animal and plant species:

So far 15.000 plant species, over 1000 bird species and 200 species of mammals have been identified in Manu.

According to biologists no other rainforest Park can compare with Manu´s biodiversity ( 40 % more bird species than in the brazilian Amazon) and opportunities to observe wildlife, e.g. at the Mammal- and Macaw Salt Licks.

Manu is remote, away from civilisation and scarcely populated, which distinguishes Manu from other rainforest destinations like Pto. Maldonado. Some of the indigenous tribes in Manu have no contact to civilization.

Some birds are endemic to this area as e.g. White tufted Sunbeam(Aglaeactis castelnaudii), Red and white Antpitta (Grallaria erythroleuca), Puna Thistletail (Schizoeaca h. helleri) and White cheeked Tody Tyrant (Poecilotriccus albifacies).

No other area in America offers such excellent viewing of rare or difficult to observe animals.

· Why go with Amazon Trails Peru?

We were founded by experienced, professional Manu guides - most of them grew up in the rainforest - , who make sure that you have the best opportunities to observe wildlife without disturbing the animals.

Our guides are bilingual and give you a comprehensive impression of the rainforest ecosystem and provide you with an unique, learning rainforest experience at a fair price.

Amazon Trails Peru aims to train local people and work with them, support lodges and enterprises owned by local people and communities (e.g. Casa Matsiguenka).

· Why go to Blanquillo and Maquisapayoj?

Blanquillo and Maquisapayoj are private reserves, situated in pristine primary rainforest, only a short boat ride from Boca Manu. In Blanquillo there is the big Macaw Clay Lick and 2 oxbow lakes with ideal conditions to observe giant otters from a wooden catamaran.

Maquisapayoj has an elevated platform to observe tapirs at night – surrounded by dense forest.

Nobody else around in hundreds of kilometers of rainforest!

Both places are surrounded by plenty of private walking trails to discover, ideal to observe animals.·

· Ecotourism and Conservation

Manu is a very rich/ biodiverse but fragile ecosystem.

Being home of several endangered species, e.g. Giant Otter, Harpy Eagle, Giant Anteater, Ocelot and Wooly Monkey, ecologically sustainable tourism in Manu is imperative and a low tourism flow is favourable.

Visitors should be informed about rainforest conservation and favorabletourism activities have to be controled ( e.g. don´t get too close to the animals).

Ecotourism also is an important economic activity for the inhabitants of the rainforest that permits its use without distroying the rainforest resources.

That´s why it´s very important to involve local people in Manu tourism!
