More than 500 years ago the Inkas built an extensive network of trails that covered mayor parts of Peru. Cusco, the capital of the Inka empire (then called Qosqo, or Navel of the World) is located in the centre of this network, some parts of this old trail system are still being used in present times.
One of these trails forms the classic Inka Trail route to Machu Picchu.
The Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary is situated at 2400m altitude, surrounded by the cloud forest, just 70 km from Cusco.
There are many other spectacular Andean Treks that lead to Machu Picchu as well as to other Inca sites, such as Choquekirao. Most treks journey over high Andean passes with spectacular views of the highland landscape.
In this world of mysterious, mist covered vegetation and old Inca ruins you also have the opportunity to see numerous and rare bird species, old Andean forest and colourful orchids.
Amazon Trails Peru is an on-the-Scene Tour Operator and offers 2, 3, 4 and 5 day treks and also more difficult 8 day treks, all departing from Cusco.
